WILKINSON, James (1868-1943)
Leeds 1884; 1CL Cork 1892-1933
The Carnegie Library opened in 1905 was burnt down, with all its contents, including the librarian's residence, in December 1920 during 'The Troubles'. Wilkinson, who also played his part in the Irish literary revival, immediately began collecting books for a replacement. He did not secure a new building, however, until 1930; a portion of this forms the core of the present Central Library opened in 1979.
